Moonstone, also known as hecatolite, is a luminous, opalescent gemstone that belongs to the feldspar group, a mineral found in the earth's crust. You can spot a moonstone by its adularescence - a luminous, ethereal glow that appears as light passes through the stone.
Durability
Rated a 6 – 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, moonstone is fragile and susceptible to scratching, cracking, and other damage. It should be placed in a protective setting and worn with care. How to choose a moonstone
Color
Moonstones come in a full spectrum of shades including colorless, white, blue, green, grey, peach, brown, and an almost midnight black. Colorless moonstones with a strong blue sheen are the most valuable, and the more evenly distributed the adularescence, the higher the quality.
Cut
Most moonstones are cut into cabochons—smooth, rounded domes without facets. This cut brings out their adularescence, the stone’s signature glow. On rare occasions, a high-domed cabochonproduces four legged stars or a cat-eye effect.
Occasionally, high-quality transparent moonstones are fashioned into faceted cuts like brilliant cuts and rose cuts - you'll notice we love a faceted moonstone!Whether faceted or not though, a well-cut moonstone will be symmetrical with excellent polish. If cut into a cabochon, the dome should be uniformly rounded with a well proportioned height vs width ratio.
Clarity
Clarity is the measure of inclusions of imperfections within a gemstone. Like most stones, the more transparent, higher-clarity moonstones are more valuable, as they allow more light pass through and create their signature adularescence. In moonstones though, inclusions can sometimes add to their allure.
