Catherine, Gem Breakfast Founder Featured in GIA Magazine
by Courtney MacDougall January 27, 2021
GB Founder, Catherine was the featured Graduate in the GIA’s latest Education Quarterly magazine, and we wanted to share the article with all of you! If you’re never heard of them, the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is the go-to source for gemstone classification and jewelry education, and it’s where Catherine received her Graduate Diamond Diploma!
In the interview, Catherine shares more about:
How her love for diamonds and unique, independent jewels spurred the creation of Gem Breakfast
Her career before GB in Fashion Merchandising and Beauty Buying
How she built her business to feature talented indie designers and alternative gemstones
How she chooses the perfect stones for custom clients
Where she sees the jewelry world heading during this pandemic and in the future.
“I wanted to feature refreshing, surprising, beautiful alternative gems, such as salt and pepper diamonds, champagne diamonds, teal sapphires, and spinels. I also wanted some of the designers that I admire to have an additional outlet for selling their stunning jewelry. That’s how Gem Breakfast, my online store, was born.”
Rose cut diamonds look significantly larger than brilliant cut diamonds. Brilliant cuts, while shamelessly sparkly, hold a lot of their weight in the base of the diamond (where you can't see it). Rose cut diamonds, however, hold all of their weight on the top of the diamond, resulting in a much larger-looking stone from the top view.
October's second birthstone, tourmaline is an incredibly vibrant gemstone that comes in every color of the rainbow - including multi-colored stones that look like the juiciest gem-iest watermelon!
