HOW TO MEASURE RING SIZE AT HOME (if they're in on it)

There's a few different ways to quickly measure ring size. Keep scrolling for our favorite easy-to-use ring sizing tools and pro-tips to get that perfect fit!

1. PURCHASE A RING SIZER ONLINE

The most accurate way to measure ring size at home is with an adjustable ring sizer online. You can find out your ring size to within a quarter of a size - no venturing to the jewelry stores necessary and no second-guessing!

There are three standard types of ring sizers:

  • Multi-ring sizer: these ring sizers will have dozens of plastic rings on a central loop. To use, simply try the rings on until you find the one that fits you best. Ours even ships free!

  • Multi-ring sizer tool for wide bands: we created this metal ring sizer specifically for wider bands which fit differently than an average-width ring.
  • Sliding belt ring sizer: these ring sizers look like a belt with all the sizes typed on the outside. How to use: Put the sizer over your finger and slide the raised plastic notch until the sizer fits snugly against your finger. Remember, you want it tight enough that it won't come off when you move your hand around, but still comfortable! The number to the left of the plastic notch is your ring size.

2. MEASURE a ring you already own

option a) Measure the inside diameter of your ring

Have a ring that already fits the right finger?

  1. Measure straight across the inside of the ring at its widest point, from inner edge to inner edge (in mm)
  2. Match that number to the diameter column in our ring size chart above.

Option B: Match Your Ring to the Printable Size Chart

Don't have a ruler handy? Print our printable ring sizing chart at 100% scale and place the ring over the circles until the inside edge of your ring lines up as closely as possible with one of the circles. Your own printable ring size calculator!

One caveat: while the ring size chart method is fairly accurate, if you want to be 100% sure, grab one of our ring sizers for a flawless fit!

3. MEASURE YOUR RING SIZE WITH STRING or ribbon

  1. Wrap string or ribbon around your finger where a ring would normally sit.

  2. Draw a notch where the string or ribbon intersects.

  3. Use a measuring tape or ruler to measure the outstretched string in millimetres.

  4. That's your finger circumference—match it directly to the circumference column in our conversion chart below. Voila, free ring sizer!

4. GET their FINGER SIZED AT A JEWELER

How to measure ring size? The most reliable and accurate measurement will come from an in-person visit to a jeweler – they'll know exactly how a ring should fit and can recommend the perfect ring size measurement. Most jewelers will size you for free whether you're buying from them or not.

Tip: do this as your first stop and wait to have lunch until afterwards - your fingers can swell after meals, drinks, or a big session of retail therapy.

HOW TO MEASURE RING SIZE IN SECRET

ASK A FRIEND or family member

Many of us have been Pinterest-ing our engagement ring forever and they 100% know their ring size. And, many of us have of course shared this tidbit with all the ladies in our lives (I mean, in case their partner happens to ask). So, check with her mom, best friends, sister, and if they’re not sure, have them covertly ask in casual conversation or while shopping. Tip: don’t give this job to the worst actor or major gossiper in the group!

MEASURE AN EXISTING RING SHE WEARS ON HER LEFT RING FINGER

If you can sneak away with a ring they already wear on the correct finger, you're golden. Measure straight across the inside of the ring in millimetres and match the diameter to our ring size chart above.

Can't make off with it for long? Trace the inside of the ring on paper, press it into a bar of soap, or slip it onto your own finger and mark exactly where it stops. Bring that to a jeweler and they can help estimate the size.

SEND US A PICTURE OF THEIR HANDS

Show us a picture where we can see her hands, and let us know her shoe size, height, weight, and whether she's left or right handed, and we can guess her ring size for you!

PICK A RING THAT CAN BE RESIZED

To ease your mind, pick a ring that can be easily resized (most rings can be - confirm this with your jeweler). That way, it's no big deal if you're off by a bit.

Pro-tip: lean towards a larger size if you're not 100% sure – that proposal will be much sweeter if she can slide the ring on her finger and not have to stop at the knuckle!

IS IT OKAY TO ASK YOUR PARTNER FOR THEIR RING SIZE?

Absolutely! We are big fans of just asking, it's most important that your partner loves their ring and that it fits properly. So if you need some input to achieve that goal - absolutely ask away!

RING SIZING BASICS

WHAT DO RING SIZE NUMBERS MEAN?

Ring sizes in the US and Canada range from size 3 to size 15, with half sizes and quarter sizes available all the way up. These numbers are linked with either the diameter or circumference of the inside of the ring's band. For example, a size 3 has a diameter of 14 mm, while a size 13 has a 22.2 mm diameter.

The difference between a nail-bitingly loose ring and an uncomfortably snug fit can be as small as 1 mm. Even a ½ size adjustment can be very noticeable in terms of comfort. Keep reading for tips to find your perfect ring size fit!

HOW DO RING SIZES WORK?

Ring size is based on the inside measurements of the ring. As the ring size goes up, so do the inside diameter and circumference of the band. In the U.S. and Canada, rings are sized with numbers and usually come in whole, half, and quarter sizes.

Here's where those tiny increments matter: the difference between two ring sizes is measured in fractions of a millimetre, but you can absolutely feel it on your finger.

How Should a Ring Fit?

A properly fitted ring should slide over your knuckle with a little resistance, then sit comfortably at the base of your finger without spinning or slipping around.

You should need a small wiggle to take it back over the knuckle, but it shouldn't pinch, leave a deep indentation, or feel uncomfortable once it's on.

Keep in mind that wider bands fit more snugly than thinner ones, and your fingers naturally change size throughout the day. That's why we always recommend measuring more than once before committing to a size.

ARE RING SIZES UNIVERSAL?

No, ring sizes vary all over the world. Scroll down for our U.S. and Canada ring size chart plus our easy-to-use conversion chart to find your ring size all over the world!

INTERNATIONAL RING SIZE CHART + conversion guide

Ring sizes are measured the same way around the world, but the sizing systems look very different. The U.S. and Canada use numbers, the UK and Australia use letters, and many parts of Europe and Asia use their own numerical scales.

Use the chart below to convert your finger circumference in millimetres to your ring size in the U.S., Canadian, UK, Australia, Europe, China, Japan, France, or Switzerland.

ring sizing PRO-TIPS

TIME OF DAY CAN AFFECT YOUR RING SIZE

Your fingers naturally change size throughout the day, so don't rely on one measurement. For the most accurate ring size, measure a few times throughout the day when your hands are at a comfortable, normal temperature.

DIETARY CHANGES CAN AFFECT YOUR RING SIZE

Food and water intake can temporarily change your ring size too. A salty meal, alcohol, or dehydration can make your fingers swell, so skip measuring if your hands feel noticeably puffier than usual.

To get it perfect: try to measure your finger at room temperature, in the middle of the day, when you've had a fairly normal day of eating and drinking.

BAND WIDTH CAN AFFECT YOUR RING SIZE

Wider bands fit more snugly than thinner ones. If you're considering a wider band around 5 mm or more, you may need to go up a quarter or half size for a comfortable fit.

SIZING OF STACKING RINGS

If you plan on stacking to the sky, there's a few things to keep in mind:

  • If you're stacking thinner bands (less than 2 mm wide), you can order your true size and can likely stack up to 3 thin bands without them being too snug.

  • Once you get to about 5mm or more in your total stack, you'll want to go up about half a size on the top rings.

CLIMATE AND SEASON CAN AFFECT YOUR RING SIZE

Fingers swell in the heat and shrink in the cold, so try to measure at a comfortable room temperature. In other words, don't pull out the ring sizer right after ice skating—or after a mad dash through an overheated mall.

What If You're Between Ring Sizes?

Stuck between two sizes? That's exactly what half and quarter sizes are for.

If a ring sizer feels too snug in one size but noticeably loose in the next, the size in between is usually your sweet spot. A quarter-size difference may sound tiny, but you can absolutely feel it once the ring is on your hand.

If you truly have to choose between two sizes, we'd generally lean slightly larger. Fingers naturally swell throughout the day, and a ring that's a touch loose is much easier to live with than one that can't make it over your knuckle.

Keep band width in mind too. Wider bands and bigger ring stacks fit more snugly, so you may need a slightly larger size than you would for a delicate band.

What If You Get the Ring Size Wrong?

First: don't panic. Getting the size slightly wrong doesn't automatically mean starting over. Most rings can be resized, although how much depends on the design, metal, and where the stones are set.

If you're guessing a ring size for a surprise proposal, we'd usually rather see you go a little larger than smaller. The proposal goes a lot better when the ring actually makes it past the knuckle.

What If You Get the Ring Size Wrong? Resizing Rings 101

If you do get the size wrong, it's really not the end of the world. Most rings can be resized, although how much depends on the design, metal, and where the stones are set.

If you're guessing a ring size for a surprise proposal, we'd usually rather see you go a little larger than smaller. The proposal goes a lot better when the ring actually makes it past the knuckle.

Here's what you need to know about resizing:

KNOW YOUR JEWELERS' RESIZING POLICY

Many jewelers offer free resizing. Gem Breakfast is happy to help you resize your ring for a small fee depending on the size change needed.

HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU RESIZE A RING?

Rings can be resized up to 2-3 times in their lifetime depending on the complexity of the design and gemstone placements. Any more than that can be potentially damaging to the ring – it's sort of like minor surgery – better to do it once, not again and again.

THE RING YOU CAN'T RESIZE: ETERNITY BANDS

Most rings can easily be resized if you're a little bit off. The one exception: eternity bands (rings with diamonds or details all the way around the band).

So, if you aren't totally sure of her size, and want to keep the ring a secret, we recommend skipping this style to be safe.

HOW MUCH CAN YOU RESIZE A RING?

Typically, the maximum size adjustments are 2 to 3 sizes up or down. Usually, any more than that will compromise the integrity of the ring. To be safe: avoid splurging on a size 10 ring when her finger is a 6.

CAN A RING BE RESIZED BOTH SMALLER AND BIGGER?

Absolutely, a skilled jeweler can size a ring up or down fairly easily.

HOW DO JEWELERS RESIZE RINGS?

To make a ring smaller, a jeweler will cut out a small portion of the band and solder the pieces back together again. To increase a ring's size, it can either be stretched (if it's within a half-size) or cut at the back where additional metal is soldered into the gap.

After the adjustments are made, the ring is cleaned, polished, and restored to its flawless finish. You won't be able to tell that any alteration was made once it's done.

There's also other options like sizing beads, spring inserts, and sizing bars that can help with ideal ring fit. Your best bet: trust in your jeweler to help you make the best decision for you!

RING SIZing questions we get all the time

HOW DO I CALCULATE MY RING SIZE?

Measure the circumference of your finger in millimetres with a string, ribbon, or flexible measuring tape, then match that measurement directly to our ring size conversion chart. If you already have a ring that fits that finger, measure its inside diameter instead and match that measurement to our printable ring size chart.

HOW BIG IS A SIZE 7 RING?

A size 7 ring fits a finger with a 17.3 mm diameter - it is one of the most popular ring sizes in the U.S. and Canada.

WHAT IS THE RING SIZE IN THE U.S.

Ring sizes range from size 3 to size 14 - the average ring size for a woman is a size 6 and the average ring size for a man is a size 9.

How to figure out ring size in Canada?

Canada follows the same ring sizing measures as the U.S. - use our Printable Ring Sizing Chart to find out your ring size in Canada.

DOES RING SIZE HAVE TO BE EXACT?

It's always better to get your ring size right the first time so you don't have to get your ring resized, however if you do get the wrong ring size, it's not the end of the world! The only exception to that rule is with eternity rings where there are designs or stones all the way around the band - that style cannot be resized.

Also, keep in mind: your ring size changes throughout the day, in different temperatures, and after eating and drinking (more on that below), so to be on the safe side, we recommend you double check your ring size 2-3 times to find the average. The safest bet: get sized in-person at a jeweler for the most accurate expert reading.

DO RINGS COME IN 1/4 SIZES?

Yes, rings do come in 1/4 sizes. While ring sizers only show 1/2 sizes, jewelers can make rings in 1/4 sizes (including Gem Breakfast). To assess if you need a 1/4 size, the fit on the sizer should be between the full and half size.

DO 1/2 AND 1/4 SIZES REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN FIT?

Yes! A 1/2 or even 1/4 size difference can be surprisingly noticeable once the ring is on your finger. Getting as close as possible to your true size helps keep your ring comfortable and securely in place.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE RING SIZE?

In the US, the average ladies ring size is a 6, and the average men's size is about an 8.5. These are usually the display sizes in jewelry showcases. These are the most common ring sizes you will see in the marketplace.

ARE ALL FINGERS THE SAME RING SIZE?

So often, well-meaning gents bring in one of their lady's middle finger cocktail rings for engagement ring sizing. The truth: all your fingers vary in size, even between hands!

What about the ring FINGERS - are they THE SAME SIZE?

Not always! The fingers on your dominant hand are usually larger than those on your non-dominant hand. So, if she's right handed, the ring she wears on her right ‘ring finger' will likely be too big for her true ring finger.

DOES YOUR RING SIZE STAY THE SAME ALL THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE?

No, our bodies (and fingers) can fluctuate or permanently change as you get older, with pregnancy, and with weight gain/loss. Your ring size may go up or down according to your life situations.

How accurate are printable ring size charts?

Fairly accurate — but not perfect. Print scaling issues and worn-out rings can throw things off by a ¼ to ½ size. If you want super precision, go for a physical ring sizer or visit a jeweler IRL.

Are string and paper methods reliable for measuring ring size?

They’ll get you in the right range, but don’t bet your proposal on it. String can stretch, knots can slip, and markings can be slightly off. Better than guessing, but not our top pick. Try a metal or plastic ring sizer instead.

Can temperature really change your ring size?

Absolutely. Fingers swell in the heat and shrink in the cold — even salty snacks can make a difference. Measure when your hands are comfy, hydrated, and room-temp. For more tips, scroll to our ring sizing pro-tips section.

What should I do if I'm between ring sizes?

If you’re stuck between two sizes, go with the larger one — it’s easier to size down than up. And a too-tight ring is a proposal buzzkill. Bonus: resizing down is usually a breeze.

Is it normal for a ring to feel tighter at different times?

Totally. Your hands fluctuate all day, especially after workouts, wine nights, or salty snacks. A ring that fits perfectly at noon might feel snug at midnight. That’s why we say: measure more than once.

Is there a way to measure ring size from a photo?

We can give it our best guess! Send us a pic of the hand in question, plus their height, shoe size, and whether they’re left- or right-handed. It’s not surgical-level precision, but it works surprisingly well — reach out here.

What’s the most accurate way to find ring size at home?

A plastic or metal ring sizer is your best bet — it gives you down-to-the-quarter-size accuracy without stepping into a store. We’ve got them ready to ship (and they’re just $5).
